Kelly Carbine is a proud Wirnagu Kokatha Woman from the West Coast of South Australia. She was born in Ceduna and moved around growing up, from Port Lincoln, to Coober Pedy and then back to Port Lincoln again where she currently lives with her family.
She is a Contemporary Aboriginal Artist. She loves being able to have the ability to show my Aboriginal culture through stories in her art. Her artwork embodies cultural stories in an optimistic and contemporary style. She paints and mixes colours to tell stories of the land she grew up and travelled on. She learnt to paint at the age of 18 while being mentored by many Elders in her younger years, who taught her using traditional symbols and skills to experiment with elements of line, colour and form.
WIRANGU COAST STORY BY KELLY CARBINE
This design is called Wirangu Coast, it is based around my ancestor’s traditional lands on the West Coast of South Australia. This design shows that the saltwater is an important part of my culture the parallel wavy lines represent the rippling of water of water and sand hills that run along the coast. The design tells the story of family bonding and bonding and community coming together, this is shown by the concentric circles which signify places and the element of coming together. Families come together to be able to swim and enjoy coastal food on the sandy beaches along the coastline to keep culture strong and maintain the connection to country. The curved U shape symbolises a person. It represent the shape that is left on sand when a person sits cross legged. The marks that are placed either side of the person’s symbol can define whether it represents a male or female. The man is indicated by the straight lines, which are his spears used for hunting.
